If you have thousands of photos in your camera roll, the thought of organizing them is exhausting. But you do not need to spend an entire weekend scrolling through years of memories to get your storage back under control.
By following a simple 10-minute routine once a month, you can keep your iPhone storage clean, avoid paying for extra iCloud space, and actually find the photos you care about.
1. Start with the Easy Wins: Duplicates
The fastest way to reduce clutter is to remove exact copies. Apple does this for you automatically.
- Open the Photos app.
- Tap on Albums and scroll to the bottom.
- Tap on Duplicates under Utilities.
- Select all and tap Merge.
This instantly groups identical photos into a single high-quality image, deleting the redundant copies.
2. Clear Out the Junk: Screenshots and Downloads
We screenshot recipes, funny text messages, and tracking numbers, and then forget about them forever. These files clutter the camera roll and hide your real memories.
- In the Albums tab, find Screenshots under Media Types.
- Quickly review the last few weeks of screenshots.
- Keep the important documents and delete the rest in bulk by tapping Select and dragging your finger.
3. Target the Heavyweights: Videos
A handful of forgotten videos can take up more space than thousands of photos. Look for old screen recordings, accidental pocket videos, or long clips from concerts that you will never watch again.
- Go to the Videos album.
- Delete the obvious mistakes or files that are no longer relevant.
4. Sort the "Similar" Photos
This is where the real work happens. Apple can find exact duplicates, but it cannot tell you which of the 12 selfies you took is the best one. These "similar" photos make up the bulk of camera roll clutter.
Instead of manually tapping tiny thumbnails, use a dedicated app to speed up the process.
Swipe Photo Cleaner is designed specifically for this step. It shows your photos full screen, chronologically. You simply swipe right on the good ones and swipe left to trash the bad ones. It is incredibly fast and keeps you from getting distracted.
5. Empty the Trash
None of this matters if you do not take out the trash. Deleted photos move to the "Recently Deleted" album for 30 days. To reclaim your storage today, go to Albums, scroll down to Recently Deleted, authenticate, and tap Delete All.
Build the Habit
Set a reminder on your calendar for the first day of every month. Spend 10 minutes merging duplicates, deleting old screenshots, and swiping through your recent similar photos. A clean camera roll is faster to search, uses less storage, and is much more enjoyable to look through.
